Sailor’s IPA box

To give you sea legs!

Background

IPAs are a type of beer that is characterized by its strong hop character. They were first brewed in England in the 18th century, and they quickly became popular among sailors due to their high alcohol content and long shelf life.

Jopen had already brewed quite a few IPAs. These beers were put together in a box whose name I was allowed to come up with. I thought it should have something to do with the origin of IPAs. After some brainstorming it became the Sailor’s IPA box.

Social media

The Sailor’s Box got it’s respected social media post (Instagram and Facebook) and I wrote an article for it as well. I wanted to link the article to the Sailor’s Box. I put the different flavors of the IPAs into four different categories that I linked to a type of sea barbarian. This way, readers can find the perfect IPA for them by answering the question, “What kind of sea barbarian are you?”

Challenges

The main challenge of writing this text was accurately describing the complex flavors of the four IPAs in the Sailor’s IPA box in a way that would be interesting and engaging to the reader.

Process

Writing this article was fun, since I wanted a different approach for it. This meant I had a short creative session to think of how to mix and match the beers to their ‘sea barbarian’. After writing, I worked with my fellow intern Babette Stoffels to take pictures of all the beers at the Mooie Nel in Haarlem.
