Discussions in a podcast – Why I chose to speak up
In June 2023, I participated in episode three of the podcast Huisje, Boompje, Baby, a platform that explores unconventional family choices. I shared my personal story about not wanting to have children—a decision I often feel pressured to justify to others. During the episode, I explained how I’ve faced comments like “You’ll change your mind” or “You’re too young to decide,” and why I stand by my choice. The podcast also featured two other women, each with their own unique perspectives on family. One, a woman from Pakistan, spoke about the religious pressures she faces to have children, while the other shared her experiences as a single mother of two adopted children, raising them in a racially diverse environment.
For me, it was not only an opportunity to voice my beliefs but also to help challenge the societal expectations we place on women regarding motherhood. While discussing my choice, I highlighted the importance of understanding that everyone’s path to happiness is different, and that’s okay. Ultimately, this episode provided a safe space to talk openly about why not everyone desires traditional family structures and to promote the idea that all choices should be met with respect and understanding.
